Keeping alive the holy tradition of the Catholic Church and recalling the selection of seven men as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, 38 candidates of various dioceses of the Sri Lankan Catholic Church were ordained deacons at the National Seminary of Our Lady Of Lanka, Kandy by His Lordship Rt. Rev. Dr. Raymond Wickramasinghe.
The origin of the diaconate goes back to the time of the New Testament. The word 'Deacon' is derived from the Greek word 'diakonos' means servant. The ministry of a deacon in the Roman Catholic Church is exercised in three areas: proclamation of the Word, assisting in the Liturgy and helping the charitable work in the Church. Deacons are ordinary ministers of the sacrament of baptism and can also serve as the church's witness at the Holy Matrimony. They may also preside at funeral rites. Moreover deacons in the Roman Catholic Church are not graced with celebrating the Holy Mass, hearing Confession and anointing of the Sick. We thank the good Lord and pray for the success of newly ordained deacons as they take up their ministries in respective dioceses.
